Heart Healthy Tips For The Warmer Days Ahead

Spring is almost over, and summer is just around the corner! You’re probably planning some cool trips, parties, or events this summer. Even if you’re not, you’ll probably have to leave the house at some point and go out into the world to get your groceries, grab dinner, see a movie, or run some errands. Either way, you’ll be outside in the heat right? The experts here at Roosevelt Cardiology here in Jackson Heights, Queens NY want you and your loved ones to be prepared! When you head outside, as these warm days turn to hotter ones, these are just some of the tips you should follow to keep your heart, body, and mind happy and healthy this summer!

The Basics

Drinking A Lot Of Water Is Essential. Think about it for a second. The hotter it is outside, the more you’ll sweat right? The more you sweat, the harder your body has to work in order to cool itself down right? That also means your heart and lungs are working ‘overtime’ to help keep your body tries to regulate itself. Drinking water will help replenish any lost fluids and keep your body from overheating!

Staying In The Shade Is Very Important. When it gets too hot outside, your body can sometimes go through some adverse side effects. Overheating can sometimes cause: dizziness, shortness of breath, exhaustion and more! Try and keep cool by seeking shade as much as possible. This can be under a tree, an umbrella, or a tent. Stay cool in the heat!

Wearing Comfortable Clothing Is Very Important. Try staying away from all black clothing, heavier clothing (jeans, sweatshirts, or thermals). Try not to wear clothing that is too tight or doesn’t allow for comfortable movement (tight shirts or pants can sometimes make it harder to move around comfortably outside). Wear clothing that allows you to breath, move, and relax comfortably when you’re out and about.

Wearing Sunscreen Will Help Prevent Sunburns. Did you ever have a parent, aunt, or a teacher that told you to “put on your sunscreen or you’ll be sorry later!” Well, they were right about that! Sunscreen (generally SP 30 or above) is a must have if you plan on going outside on a hot and sunny day! Sunscreen generally comes in two easy to use forms: sprays or lotions.

Wearing Sunglasses Can Help Protect Your Eyes From Powerful UV Rays. Our eyes are the windows to the rest of the world. We love to see a beautiful beach, water, or scenery on a nice summer day right? Well, if you’d like to keep your eyes working well all summer (and all year) long? Wear sunglasses, or at the very least a hat to protect your eyes.

Taking Breaks & Being Mindful Of How Your Body Feels Is Very Important. No one knows your body and how you feel at any given point better than you do. When you’re tired? Sit down. When you’re thirsty? Get something to drink (water especially). Listening to you body when it’s hot out can prevent things like: heat exhaustion, dizziness, and more. Stay alert, and stay safe.

We hope these tips help you and your family stay “cool” this summer!
